About Stitch & Sum

Stitch & Sum is a small, independent site of free calculators for quilting, cross-stitch, knitting, crochet and sewing. It exists because the math in these crafts is simple but fiddly: fractions of a yard, seam allowances, square roots for triangles, and rounding that has to match how a shop cuts fabric. Getting it wrong costs real money, or a trip back to a shop that has sold out of the fabric.

What we are, honestly

We are a calculator site, not a quilting celebrity or a pattern company. The calculators are built by a small team that writes the code and checks every formula against published sources: fabric manufacturers' charts, the Craft Yarn Council's standards, and well-known tutorials from experienced makers. Each page lists where its numbers come from, and the math is covered by automated tests that run every time the site changes.

When the sources disagree (they sometimes do, for example on how much extra to add to binding), we say so on the page and show you the setting to change.

How the site is paid for

The calculators are free and need no account. The site shows ads served by Google AdSense, which pay for hosting and development. We don't sell your data, and the calculators run in your browser, so the numbers you type aren't sent to us.

Corrections

If a result doesn't match your pattern or a trusted chart, please email hello@stitchandsum.com with the numbers you entered. We check every report and update the page, and the "last checked" date on each calculator shows when it was last reviewed.
